Tree service for Plant City — the strawberry capital's oaks and pines

Plant City has the highest canopy of any city in the area at 34 percent and a historic district under big live oaks. Twelve miles west of Lakeland on I-4, we're there every week.

Plant City is the winter strawberry capital — about 40,000 people on the Hillsborough side of the county line, twelve miles west of Lakeland on I-4, with a historic downtown around the old Union Depot, a historic residential district of 1890s–1930s homes under big live oaks, and farm and grove land in every direction that's slowly turning into subdivisions. Its canopy is 34 percent, the highest of any city in this part of Florida, and a lot of that canopy is a century old: live oaks worth keeping on the historic streets, laurel oaks and water oaks beside them at the end of their lives, and camphors from the 1950s on the postwar blocks.

Outside the historic core it's farm country: slash and longleaf pines on the sandy edges of the strawberry fields and old groves, fencerow oaks, and the 1980s–2000s subdivisions along I-4, Thonotosassa Road and Alexander Street with their planted laurel oaks and queen palms now reaching 30 to 40 years old. Plant City is also squarely in the lightning belt — the Polk–Hillsborough line is where Florida's strikes concentrate — and it took Milton's winds and rain along with Lakeland. We handle the historic-district oaks, the subdivision laurel oaks and palms, farm and grove-edge pines, lightning-struck trees, lot clearing, and hurricane prep and storm cleanup across the city and the eastern Hillsborough countryside.

Questions from Plant City homeowners

Does Plant City require a permit to remove a tree?

Plant City has a tree ordinance that protects grand and specimen trees and regulates removal on larger and commercial parcels; many single-family removals on a typical lot are exempt, but a large live oak may need a permit, and the city requires an arborist report for complaints about private dead trees. We check per property before we cut.

Why does my farm lose so many pines to lightning?

Open ground, tall trees, and the Polk–Hillsborough line is the lightning capital of the country. A pine standing alone in a field is the tallest thing for a quarter mile. Struck pines draw beetles and die; we assess them and take the ones that won't make it.

Can you clear the old grove for a house pad?

Yes — forestry mulching for the dead citrus and brush, removal and stumping for the pines and oaks in the pad, and we keep the fencerow live oaks if you want them. Permits depend on the parcel size and zoning.

How far is Plant City from your base?

Twelve miles on I-4 — about 20 minutes. Same-week estimates, same-day emergencies.
