Tree service for Kathleen and Polk City — acreage, pines and the Green Swamp

North of Lakeland the lots get big, the pines get tall and the Green Swamp starts. Kathleen and Polk City are where the county's growth meets its wildest ground.

Forestry mulcher clearing palmetto and scrub oak on a Polk County lot

Kathleen is the unincorporated community north of Lakeland along Kathleen Road and US-98 North — about 6,500 people on acreage lots, horse property and the subdivisions that are filling in between them, ZIP 33849. Polk City, further north at the I-4 and SR-33 junction, is a small city of about 2,700 on the edge of the Green Swamp — the 560,000-acre headwaters of four rivers, where the pine flatwoods give way to cypress strands and bay swamps. Both are growth-edge country now: the county added 150,000 people in five years and a lot of the new lots are up here, carved out of pine flatwoods, old pasture and the edges of the swamp.

The trees are tall slash and longleaf pines on sand, live oaks and laurel oaks in the hammocks and fencerows, cypress and bay along the wet edges, and on the new lots, whatever the clearing crew left. The work is acreage work: dead and lightning-struck pines (this is open, high ground in the lightning belt), weight reduction on the big hammock oaks over the houses, lot clearing and forestry mulching for the new builds, fence-line clearing on the horse properties, and after a storm, the long driveways and downed pines that keep people from getting out. Lots up here are often over an acre, which can put them inside Lakeland's or Polk County's tree rules when they're being developed, and the wet edges raise wetland questions; we sort both out before the machine arrives.

Questions from Kathleen & Polk City homeowners

Do I need a permit to clear my 3-acre lot in Kathleen?

Probably, if you're building — over an acre puts you in Polk County's (or, if annexed, Lakeland's) tree-preservation rules for development activity, and Ordinance 24-037 extended Lakeland's to unplatted single-family parcels over an acre. Wetlands on the swamp edge are a state question. We walk it and tell you what applies.

A lightning strike killed a pine in my pasture. Does it matter?

If it's near the house, the barn or the fence line, yes — it'll fall within a year or two. In the middle of a pasture with nothing under it, it's a snag and you can leave it for the woodpeckers. Watch the pines around it for beetles either way.

Can you clear a fence line through palmetto?

Yes — forestry mulching along a survey line is a day's work for most properties, $300–$900 per hundred feet depending on growth.

How far north do you go?

Through Polk City to the Green Swamp and up SR-33 toward the Lake County line.
